When did DMC get 'that' expensive? |
Lead | ||
|
I was stitching away on Caribbean last night and came across the first of the 6 DMC threads I was missing (missing inthe loosest sense of the word, They're
around somewhere kitted into something else) so I decided I'd pop into town today on my way home from work. First time in years I've had to buy DMC for
anything and the first time in a while I've not brought them from the US. 75p a skein!!! I was in shock last time I brought any I was paying 48p it
wasn't that many years ago! Ok whine over, but given the price they are I think I might convert any DMC threads in fairy to npi and live with the extra
cost as I prefer working with them and they're not that much more expensive.

I know I can get them for like 35 cents at a Michael's store here. Otherwise, if I go downtown for mine they are 75 cents a piece. The price difference is
crazy.

Well wow! That is a lot for one skein. I only can hit Michaels at least once every two weeks, but I am going tuesday if anyone wants me to pick them up some.

Very tempting, shame I dont need any atm! I should need the threads for a few HAED designs but I can't seem to find enthusiasm to stitch anything but
Caribbean atm

Hi, I notice you're in the UK like me. I use sewandso online and they charge 49p per skein. They have a flat rate of postage of a pound and it normally
arrives the next day. I also get all my waterlilies, and dinky dyes and other 'Martina threads' from them! Hope that helps.x

Problem is if you only want a few skeins of thread that £1 postaeg makes them more expensive.

I hadn't realised that our skeins had got so expensive, why do DMC charge us so much?

I always hear that prices in europa are the real prices and that the prices for dmc in USA are manipulated.no taxes or whatever...but it is strange..dmc is a
european compagny and we must pay most..........very strangeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I don't get how they would be manipulated at all. We only have a state sales tax that we pay on top of the price listed.

I think the "manipulation" happens at the store level. Michaels and similar stores buy floss in large quantities which reduces their cost
considerably. They than put it out as a "loss leader", in other words, they don't expect to make much, if anything on it, but they assume
you're going to buy something else when you come in the store which makes up for what they lost on the floss.

Plus Europe will have VAT taxes...which make our sale taxes here in the states look like chump change.
So between that, and out high volume of loss leader sales...I think that is why we pay so little compared to the rest of the world for DMC.
