I would have expected Ads to be turned off for funded communities automagically! That was not the case but I have it set correctly now (I hope!). So I suspect the appearance of the ads has more to do with individual memberships than how the forum is supported. For my part, tt's worth a $1.00 a month not to see those annoying ads.
